I think you're going overboard a little. Put your law book back on the shelf & take a deep breath. You're giving this guy too much credit. Avery is dumb. He's an overhyped pest. He's also the quintessential spoiled athlete. Imagine what he'd be like if he were actually good? He'd become hockey's version of Terrel Owens!! He reacted. Anywhere he played before- his teammates, opponents & fans had an issue with him. He came to New York and the city embraced him so he thought he had it made. He hasn't been around long enough to see how quickly the fans' opinion of him can change. His feelings were hurt. Not so tough after all, eh Sean?

can't put the law book back on the shelf, I'm a lawyer!!!

I think you guys are all overlooking the fact that immature or not, Avery is a very important piece of the puzzle. He showed us in a short period of time that given the right situation, he can be exactly the opposite of what he was in LA. He drew multiple penalties a game, rather than taking them. He agitated the other team to the point of confusion, rather than agitating his own teammates. And while THR (The Hockey Rabbi) points out that Avery was misplaced in making a pre-series statement that he will 'hurt' the Buffalo squad, I actually think that worked to the Rangers favor, even though they lost. I'm for anything that gets the opponent focused on things other than the hockey game. Not to mention, we all forget so quickly how Jagr was praising this guy after every game like he was the best thing to happen to the Rangers since Al 'Red Light' Messina. Now all of a sudden hes a 'malcontent'? I'm sorry, I don't buy it. Like I mentioned in a previous comment, Slats is not above slighting players to get what he wants. This is nothing more than Sather posturing to save someone elses $. If you were to ask the team if they want Avery on the team I would be willing to bet they would all say yes. Remember 1 thing: it was Slats who traded for this guy. He targeted him & pulled the trigger on the deal. Do you really think he would trade for a guy-while looking for a season turning move to jump start his team- that he thought is a 'detriment to his team'? Come on now.....

When it comes to insults, Savior is no match for Milbury. Mad Mike made Tommy Salo cry during his arbitratoin hearing! True story!!! I can't wait to watch him on NBC.

Back to Avery- I said it once and I'll say it again: Sean Avery is an modern day version of Keith Acton.

1. The Rangers gave up almost nothing for Avery.
2. Avery's contract was up at season's end. That means that if the experiment didn't work, the Rangers could walk with no financial obligations or implications.

Sather took a shot on Avery. It was pretty much free. Sather was hoping it would work (which it did) but he certainly didn't bet on it. You imply that Sather was somehow determined to get Avery. I see it differently: the team needed a jolt of lightning at that time. Avery might have been able to provide it. Sather lost nothing in trying so why not give it a chance.
