Here's a great feature article from a guest writer. He's a loyal fan of this blog and it's a pleasure to post his thoughts in this feature. I give you Moss:
Being a real hockey fan means not caring whether the Stanley Cup Finals are being hosted by a team from Anaheim or Detroit. It means enjoying the game of hockey at its best. Nowhere was that more evident than last nights game at the 'Pond', where, from big names to no-names--Travis Moen?--the game was played at its best. I don't care that game 1 was played in a city where people care more about Lindsey Lohan's latest check-in to rehab than they do about real, old-fashioned pucks. The problem is, apparently the league does care. And its killing me- and the game itself . Our very own Gary Bettman has decided- and rightfully so- that the game needs to be polished and spiced up in order to sell to the masses. So we see the 'new NHL', with all these funky rules & trapezoids and other 'up & down hockey' inducing restrictions to recreate the glory days of the 80's & early 90's, not to mention a mysterious 'You-Tubing' of the game that Mr. Bettman feels will get the game on board with the technologically enhanced generation. Hey Gary, I hear ya. I really do. But I think what you're really doing is telling your gorgeous daughter to get a nose job because she hasn't yet found a boyfriend. Maybe the problem really isn't your daughter, Gary. Allow me to apologize right now. To the game of hockey, to it's players, to the real hockey fans. Because at this pace, by 2015, hockey will be played 3-on-3, with shootouts after every period, and then the game will officially be ruined. Last night was just another moment in my life as a hockey fan which made me ask the question that I'm sure millions of other fans ,wherever you people are, were wondering. And that is 'is it just me, or is there nothing at all wrong with this game? Why are we looking to change it so much'? It seems to me that the league offices are not content to stand up for their game. Rather, they believe tinkering the way the game should be played will finally help the game 'find its boyfriend'. Well, sorry Gary, there is nothing wrong with the game of hockey. The problem is the people, the fans. They just don't see it. They don't appreciate the beauty, the artistry, the skill. So what's the solution? In all honesty, I don't know. But I can tell you this- the last thing in the world the game needs is a nose job.
